Odisha Natya Sangh Foundation Day Celebrated in Koraput with Musical Tribute to Pranab Patnaik

The 39th Foundation Day of the Odisha Natya Sangh was celebrated at the Koraput Cultural Society (KCS), Koraput, with a musical tribute to eminent singer Pranab Patnaik and recognition of the rich contribution of the Koraput region to theatre and performing arts.

Addressing artists and cultural enthusiasts, speakers highlighted the enduring role of theatre in society and its potential to educate people, promote social reform and preserve cultural traditions. They stressed the need to encourage young artists and provide them with opportunities to participate in theatrical activities.

Recalling the golden years of theatre in Koraput, Chief  speaker Gouri Prasad Rath  noted that productions were earlier staged regularly, often for three days, with ticket prices ranging from Rs. 5 to Rs. 10. Ticket sales and support from local institutions helped sustain theatrical activities.

The speakers called for regular performances, suggesting that theatre groups organise at least one ticketed show every two months to revive public interest. Damonjodi and Sunabeda were cited as places where regular performances continue to attract audiences.The speakers urged Koraput artists to seek wider recognition across Odisha.

The celebration underscored the need for sustainable funding, greater public participation and the involvement of younger generations to ensure the continuity of theatre in the region.
